ABOUT US

We are located on a 10-acre koi farm called Morning Light Koi Farm in Vancouver, Washington, which is near Portland, Oregon. We have been involved with fish for over 40 years.

We bred discus in the '70s and 12 years ago, seriously got into koi. We breed and import koi and we sell (wholesale and retail) koi and koi-related products.

We feature a month-long quarantine program for all of our koi.

We believe the customer should get the healthiest koi (s)he can, and the education required to keep koi that way.

Come see us and see for yourself. We are nice folks and will help you.

Morning Light Koi Farm Nothing to Carp About
by Mr. James Hill of the Yuuyake Shimbun

"Raising koi is a very enjoyable and fascinating hobby, as well as a stress reliever."
--Brian Drake

Starting new businesses takes a lot of work, time, and is costly. The new Morning Light Koi Farm is no exception. But what sets this business apart from most others is the passion and love the owner Brian Drake has for koi and Japanese culture.

Brian's fascination with fish started when he was just five years old and his grandmother bought him some fish and an aquarium. They filled it with water and fish and he really enjoyed the aquarium until it tipped over and broke and all the fish died. He and his grandmother were saddened because to Brian his fish are like family, "You raise them, feed them, give them medicine when they are sick or injured and when a fish dies for some reason, a little part of you dies."

"A koi lover never has enough koi," Brian says. He doesn't like to maintain grass in his yard and he hopes to share his love of koi and promote this art that is a lifestyle to many who raise koi. He hopes to inspire people that this life style is like no other. He feels the serenity of just sitting and watching your fish gives you much more than expected. The sense of peace, harmony and pride as you sit and reflect makes it all worth it. Brian says that raising koi is not work, it's just lots of fun!"

Brian has been raising koi for ten years and has owned his ten-acre farm for four years. He has four greenhouses he uses to raise and breed koi. He uses English-style ponds on the farm due to liability concerns about visitors having accidents. With Japanese-style ponds people can easily fall in and be injured. The English-style ponds offer some other advantages, such as allowing visitors to sit on the walls of the pond as they watch the koi and permitting the more adventurous to net the fish they want to purchase. Besides being safer, Brian and his staff can cover the ponds with framed nets at night to keep the fish from jumping out.

Whether you're a first time koi shopper, are looking for area koi clubs or want to purchase some of the top quality fish and supplies available in North America, Morning Light Koi Farm is a must stop. They carry everything needed to raise koi, including a huge variety of filter systems, food, vitamins, medicines and, of course, koi. The price for these beautiful imported Japanese fish ranges from as little as $10 for baby koi to over $10,000 for the more expensive larger koi.
